This project centres on the myths and customs surrounding red pandas in the Himalayan region, aiming to explore the connection between the symbolic meanings that human societies ascribe to animals and their actual living conditions through visual and auditory media.
In many cultures, the red panda is often seen as a symbol of good fortune; for example, red panda hats worn during weddings embody this cultural symbolism. However, this symbolism frequently obscures the reality of red pandas as living beings, overlooking their roles within ecosystems and their survival needs. These symbols not only shape public perceptions of red pandas but can also lead to uneven allocation of conservation resources.
Through the dual sensory forms of animation and sound, this project will document the cultural symbolism surrounding red pandas and provide a critical reflection on this phenomenon. Using the unique presentation of a zoetrope, the audience is encouraged to engage deeply with the relationship between the individuality of animals and their symbolism, prompting a reconsideration of human-animal connections.
